Currently Bârsana is one of the favorite destinations of pilgrims and tourists from Romania and and abroad because of the wooden church, Bârsana Monastery, but also for the costumes, the handcarved wooden gates in Maramureș style and, last but not least, for the gastronomy of this region.
Bârsana church is situated in Maramureș, in the Iza valley.
The old wooden church was built in 1711 by the noble priest Ioan Ștefanca, together with his sons and the other villagers, to thank God for the protection during The Great Plague one year before.
