Scarisoara Cave
This special cave, located in the Apuseni Mts is one of the largest ice caves in Romania, and holds the world’s second largest glacier.
It was first mentioned during the Habsburg monarchy in 1863 by the Austrian speleologist & topographer Adolf Schmidl. Declared a natural monument and a speleological reservation, the cave (situated at 1.150 m of altitude) is famous for its glacier - the most compact underground ice block in Europe - older than 3.000 years. The glacier area is 5.500 m2 and the ice layer has a thickness of 26-37 meters.
