Day 1

Sibiu: Cultural and Ethnic Diversity
Group pick up from Sibiu Airport, transfer to the hotel.
Sibiu is one of Romania’s most charming cities, elected in 2007 as the European Capital of Culture, together with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Sibiu hosts Romania's largest German community (German: Hermannstadt) and also a significant Hungarian minority (Hungarian: Nagyszeben), along with its ethnic Romanians; these three cultures have peacefully co-existed along the city’s history.
Pedestrian city tour of the medieval centre of Sibiu: the Large Square with Brukenthal Palace, Haller House, the Catholic Church and the Council Tower – one of the city’s landmarks; the Small Square with Luxembourg House, the Liar's Bridge, the House of Arts; Huet Square with the Evangelical Church and its tiny colourful houses, some built in the XIIth century; and Strada Cetatii (Fortress Street) with the Guilds Defense Towers and cozy cafes.

Romania’s largest theater festival in (Sibiu International Theater Festival) and the third in Europe takes place on his stages and fills its cobbled streets and squares with magic and joy; Film Festivals (Transylvania International Film Festival; ASTRA Film Festival), Jazz (Sibiu Jazz Festival, since 1974; Jazz & More), Rock (ARTmania Festival), Folk Music Festivals, Pottery Fair (each September), are just some of the events that take place in the city squares, attracting tens of thousands of tourists - young and senior alike - annually.

Day 2

Sibiu Outskirts: Hike or Bike ?

Hike: Visit the town Cisnadie (German: Heltau, 10 km far from Sibiu), with its Saxon fortified church of St. Walpurga (built in the XIIIth century, proudly showing the first lightning rod ever to be mounted in Transylvania) and admire the small towns’ Saxon architecture and households. Afterwards a short trip is arranged to Cisnadioara (German: Michelsberg), with its Romanesque Basilica, perched high on a hill, offering an impressive view of the Fagaras Mts; this Basilica being an exquisite architectural monument in Transylvania, the oldest in Romania (1260).

Bike: Bikes can be rented for this purpose for those who are interested in exploring by pedaling; an accessible, funny and friendly way to enjoy all the highlights present on the way. (not included)

In the afternoon, get acquainted with the traditional folk architecture and popular techniques displayed in the picturesque open air "ASTRA" Museum, located in the forest of Dumbrava Sibiului.

The choice is yours !

Day 3

Sibiu, Biertan, Sighisoara: Saxon Heritage

On the way to Sighisoara, the route crosses an area that concentrates a large part of the Transylvanian Saxons fortified churches & villages: almost every village in the area is settled around a fortified church built between the XIIIth and the XVth century by the Saxon settlers. Transylvania is a unique place in the whole world: in such a small region 150 locations with fortified churches or defense-churches in the villages are to be found, preserved, and displayed.
Short visit in Medias - St Margareth's church, late Gothic; followed by a visit to the impressive Biertan (German: Birthälm) fortified church, former see of the Protestant bishops for 300 years, and also the village with its traditional Saxon households and specific charm.
Transfer to Sighisoara, a small fortified city in the heart of Transylvania. Visit of the well preserved fortified site, some of its highlights being: the Stag House, the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill, the Venetian-Gothic House, the Covered Stairs.
Sighisoara (German: Schässburg) is one of Transylvania’s gems, one of the most charming cities in the region, and offers an outstanding testimony of the local Saxons heritage. As it is the best preserved medieval citadel in Romania, Sighisoara offers a genuine feeling of a medieval fortress, one of its main features being that it has been permanently inhabited, one of the most important being Prince Vlad “The Impaler” Dracul, the main source of inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Vampire Novel “Dracula”; a visit to his supposedly birthouse in Sighisoara is possible.
Return to Sibiu.
